We are a sharp-witted and friendly bunch trusted by business owners, HR professionals and senior executives to handle sensitive and critical employment issues with professionalism and care.

With over 75 years’ combined employment law experience, we pride ourselves on delivering high quality results on complex and challenging issues for clients across Yorkshire and the UK. Loyalty, integrity and respect defines our client relationships.

Firm partners, Tiggy Clifford and Emma Whiting who originally met at university, founded Torque Law in 2016 with a vision to ‘do things differently’. The firm has since grown to be the largest employment law specialist in North Yorkshire winning numerous accolades including firm listings in The Legal 500 2021, Chambers & Partners 2021 and Niche Law Firm of the Year at the Yorkshire Legal Awards 2019.

Emma Whiting

Emma has a wealth of knowledge across the full spectrum of employment law issues, with a particular emphasis on providing strategic employment advice on complex and reputationally significant matters for employers and senior executives.

Emma has successfully defended high profile discrimination and whistleblowing claims for employers , in the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal. She is also recognised as an accomplished negotiator, securing favourable outcomes for some of the region’s most senior executives.

Emma is experienced in providing pragmatic and commercial advice to employers, executives and employees.

Her knowledge and experience cover a wide range of employment related matters, including advising employers in unfair dismissal and complex discrimination claims, the negotiation of exit packages and settlement agreements, redundancy situations, disciplinary matters, and the drafting of contracts of employment / service agreements and policy documents.

Emma is also skilled at advising clients in relation to TUPE issues, and the employment aspects of commercial property and corporate matters.

Tom Watkins

Consultant Employment Law Solicitor

Tom brings over 20 years of specialist employment law experience. Tom’s thoughtful and thorough approach is combined with swift and effective guidance, supporting clients to find solutions to often complex and delicate matters.

He brings considerable experience in advising employers on the full range of employment issues to include disciplinary and performance matters, complex discrimination claims, variations to contract, management of absenteeism, collective consultation and TUPE.

Whilst Tom acts for a wide range of employer clients he has particular expertise in the education sector, acting for a number of leading Independent Schools throughout England. Tom works closely with Bursars, Head Teachers and Governors to ensure that their standards and approach are reflected in consistent and effective advice.

Tom is described by clients as being “quick to get to the heart of a problem”, providing, “clear-thinking, razor-sharp advice” and as having a “practical and pragmatic approach”.

Tori Jackson

Consultant Employment Law Solicitor

Admitted as a Solicitor: September 2010

Tori is a knowledgeable solicitor in both contentious and non-contentious employment matters with experience of working for both larger corporates and SME businesses.

Tori advises employers on grievance and disciplinary matters, employment disputes and Employment Tribunal claims and the termination of employment, including the negotiation and drafting of settlement agreements. Tori also drafts effective employment contracts and service agreements, policies and handbooks for employers.

Susan Burnett

Practice Administrator

Susan helps the team with day-to-day administration and support. Susan’s background in law provides her with a hugely useful understanding of compliance and client matters.

Michelle Smith

Practice Administrator

Michelle assists with day to day administration and support and marketing activities. Michelle has a background in Office Management and has worked as a PA across many sectors.

Alison Hodgson

Finance Manager

Alison handles all of our invoicing, accounts and credit control matters and keeps our books balanced.
