Advice For Employers & HR Professionals

The Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024

The Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024 changes came into force on 8 March 2024.

Before these changes, paternity leave and pay could only be taken in one block. The regulations propose that fathers can claim their entitlement in two non-consecutive week blocks.

The new rules will apply to babies born or adopted either on or after 6 April 2024. It allows fathers to claim paternity leave pay at any point in the first year after the child is born (rather than only within the first 8 weeks). Further, the notice period to notify an employer for each period of leave is reducing from 14 weeks to 4 weeks before each period of leave commences.

The notice period for statutory paternity pay for domestic adoption cases will be 7 days of having received notification of being matched with a child. After giving initial notice, this can be varied with 28 days notification.
